Trump says new pharm, chip tariffs coming in "next week or so"

NEW YORK, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that U.S. tariffs on chip and pharmaceutical imports would be coming "within the next week or so."

"We'll be putting an initially small tariff on pharmaceuticals," Trump said in an interview with CNBC. "But in one year, one and a half years, maximum, it's going to go to 150 percent, and then it's going to go to 250 percent because we want pharmaceuticals made in our country."

An announcement regarding semiconductors and chips would also be forthcoming, he said.

He added that his tariff plans were far from finished.

The president's remarks came just days after he imposed new tariffs on imports from a range of countries. They also followed the release of a disappointing July jobs report on Friday, which not only missed market expectations but also included downward revisions to the employment figures for both June and May.
